commemorative mallet, 22.01.1908
The current Shire hall was built 1908 to replace the original shire hall which was demolished due to crumbling plaster in the brickwork. This mallet was used in the opening ceremony of the new shire hall to ceremonially lay the foundation stone at the commencement of the construction of the new hall.This item commemorates the opening of one of Winchelsea's most attractive heritage buildings.The old Shire office now known locally as the "tea trooms" was the political and administrational centre of the Winchelsea Shire before the amalgamation and formation of the Surf Coast Shire.wooden mallet with gothic style silver/pewter work. inscription on base of mallet.Presented to/ Cr. The Answer is a newsletter in magazine format that is sent to the widows that are helped by Melbourne Legacy. For the widows who are sight impaired a copy of the newsletter is audio described onto CD by Vision Australia and posted to them. It contains information about meetings and activities. This edition contained articles on the Queenscliff camp, Anzac Student ceremony, Glenelg River canoe journey, donation in memory of Private Greg Sher, and Widows' High Tea. Also the history of the Battle of Lone Pine and the Lone Pine trees grown in Australia since. The Ballarat Junior Technical School (BJTS) was the junior division of the Ballarat School of Mines.The honor board was unveiled on 17 June 1922 by Sir Alexander Peacock, the Minister for Public Instruction. it was witnessed by a large gathering of parents, friends, students, past student, Albert Steane (Headmaster) and the president, Council and Staff of the Ballarat School of Mines. At the conclusion of the ceremony the junior Technical School was opened for public inspection and afternoon tea was provided by a ladies committee. The Honour Board contains 28 names and of these only one lost his life on active service. this was Francis G. Davis. After the unveiling his father, A. Davis, planted a tree in the grounds of the Junior Technical School in memory of his deceased son. The following names are on the Honour Board Adair, S.H. Allen, W.I Bennett, H.G Bernaldo, Allan Borradale, Robert Brittain, C.C.. Burge, A.A. Burrow, B.C. Carmichael, N.C. Carnegie, G Collins, H.A. City of Greater Bendigo - Civic Collection
Programme, Cambridge Press, Soldiers Memorial Hall Opening Ceremony, 1921
Opened on Tuesday, November 15th, 1921 the Hall was erected by the Citizens of Bendigo to commemorate the deeds of the men and women of the district who served in the Great War. Now one of the largest Memorial Museums in the country the Bendigo Soldiers Memorial is now home to a broad range of military memorabilia. Situated on the highly visible Pall Mall, the hall was redeveloped and officially reopened as a museum in 2018. Inside describes the reason for the building of the Soldiers Memorial and the programme for the opening events. Mayor Holland gave a speech with the Y.W.C.A providing the afternoon tea. city of greater bendigo memorials
